Read the Signs - 5 Key Clues to a Bad Fit

OK, so your bra is on and you’ve got your assets tucked in as evenly and naturally sitting as possible. Here are 5 aspects to pay close attention to as you try and establish if your bra is fitting you as well as it could.

band

  1. How does the back strap/band sit? – Is it snug and secure?  When you look at the strap from side on, it should be horizontal and not have a ‘bow’ at the back where it is riding up. If there is a bow, it could be too loose and/or too big for you. The back strap should not be able to move or slide around on your chest when you go about your day-to-day activities.

On the other hand, make sure at the front that the wire is not too far below the crease of the breast. If it is, then the band may be too tight and is being forced down to a narrower part of your ribcage.

  2. Shoulder Straps digging in – This issue relates closely to the band (remember: 80% of the support should come from the band). If the shoulder straps are digging in it may indicate that the band is too loose and therefore the straps are taking too much of the weight of the bust. It is probably a good idea to go down a band size, though do double-check that you’ve not made the straps too short.
  3. centre front of bra

  4. Centre front of bra sitting out from the body – The underwires of the bra should sit against the rib cage along their whole length. If they are lifting away from the body (probably in the centre) it means that the CUPS are probably too small and the boobs are pushing it out.
  5. bulges out of cup

  6. Bulges out of the cup – There can be a variety of reasons for the ‘multiple’ or ‘double-boob’ effect. You may either be bulging out at (a) the SIDE of the bra, or (b) the TOP/FRONT. If it is out of the side of the cup, there is a possibility that it could be related to the band being too tight.  This can cause the underwire to pull too tight, which distorts it’s shape and means it no longer follows the natural contour of your breast. The wire may also dig into the side and bottom of the breast, causing discomfort and bulging. Therefore it is important to find he correct band size to begin with.

    bulging out of top

If you are bulging out of the top of the cup, then it is most likely the cup is too small, and you need to go up in at least one cup size.
TIP: It is a great idea to wear a fairly tight fitting top/T-shirt to check this, it makes it easier to detect any bulging.

  7. wrinkled or baggy cup

  8. Cup wrinkled or baggy – More than likely you are wearing a cup size too large, and need to go down at least one size.

However, if you find that the cup fits you well but you are getting a gap where the bra meets the strap, it may mean that the cup is not quite right for your chest or boob shape. A different style of cup might just do the trick for you.  See Different Breast Shapes.

When you have looked at all these aspects of your bra, it is important to consider one more thing. All bras a made differently, with a variety of cup and underwire shapes. So, if you feel you have got all the aspects of fitting your bra correct and it still looks wrong or feels uncomfortable, then it may just be the wrong bra for your shape.
